5 Ways in to Character

Book Cover Design | Interior Design & Layout | Art Direction
client: Julia McNeal

THE PROJECT:  Create a workbook for acting students who want to master the art of developing characters. Julia McNeal developed a series of “5 ways” that grew out of her work with performing artists and writers who wanted to create a variety of powerfully compelling characters in a single story.

Julia and I worked to create a workbook that would be approachable, easy to carry around, with space to make notes, and with plenty of diagrams and stories to experience.

Designing a workbook that is beautiful, compelling, supremely practical, and clearly delivers the material being taught is a challenging job. Liz met my project full on, exactly where it was, and where I was with it. Then, with deep intellect and intuition, design expertise and talent, she listened and understood the unique nature of what I was trying to create. The results were beyond what I’d hoped was possible. Liz is whole-hearted, honest, skillful, fun, and accountable. She’s is a joy to work with and a game-changer.
